Everyone gets to be young, but not everyone gets to be old. It is a privilege to live a long and storied life. But for many elders, inter-generational and social contact is limited. We Bring the Music provides opportunities for musicians who are “out and about” to meet with and entertain friends in assisted living and nursing homes. We Bring the Music musicians have learned so much from the people they serve, learned about grace, dignity and the value of experience. We’ve also brightened the lives of our elders who have a harder time facing life’s changes. And of course, our audiences have the benefit of having many of our area’s finest musicians come right to the place where they live and entertain them!
As we learn to help people live longer, let’s be sure we also help folks live better. Give a little (or a lot) to We Bring the Music and help that happen for our elders in C’ville and Albemarle. And remember, there is no old age. There is, as there always was, just you.
You can help We Bring the Music in many ways:
Attend some of the events. A few friendly faces and someone to chat with for a bit is always welcome by the residents. The elders living in nursing homes and assisted living facilities often feel isolated and excluded from community life and having someone sit beside them as they share enjoying the music can be a big boost.
Introduce yourself and try to find out a bit about the resident during breaks in the music. You may be surprised at how much you have in common and may want to seek out that same person the next time you visit.
